Wales Rugby: Steve Tandy Reflects on Historic Defeat to South Africa - Lessons Learned & Future Hope (2026)

Imagine watching your team get utterly dismantled on their home turf, suffering their worst defeat ever. That's the reality Steve Tandy faced as Wales' defense coach when South Africa steamrolled them 73-0 in Cardiff. It was a brutal display of dominance by the Springboks, a game where everything seemed to go wrong for the Welsh squad.

South Africa ran rampant, scoring a staggering 11 tries. To add insult to injury, Eben Etzebeth of South Africa received a red card in the dying moments for gouging – a controversial end to an already lopsided match. Ultimately, the responsibility fell on Tandy to somehow salvage something positive from the wreckage.

"It's always hard to watch when you feel it's hard to get any grip of the game,” Tandy confessed. "It’s disappointing to lose any game, but obviously the margin stings, and it’s really raw for the group." He emphasized that the players weren't lacking in effort or desire. "In fairness to the group, it’s not a lack of effort, a lack of want, or a lack of trying. We just came up against a team that is way further down the track than us."

But here's where it gets controversial... The game's very existence was a point of contention. The Welsh Rugby Union scheduled the match outside World Rugby's official Test window. And this is the part most people miss...This seemingly small detail had massive implications.

Because of this scheduling choice, Wales couldn't call upon their star players based in England and France – a total of 13 key members who had participated in earlier November Tests against Argentina, Japan, and New Zealand. Imagine trying to fight a heavyweight champion with one hand tied behind your back!

Tandy was forced to cobble together a team from Wales' four regional squads. Predictably, this team, with significantly fewer caps than even the Springboks' bench, was outmatched by the world's top-ranked team.

"The fixture is the fixture, I can’t change it,” Tandy stated, accepting the hand he was dealt. "I knew when I got the job this fixture was in place." He remained focused on the future, adding, "Look, we’ll learn lessons from it, but ultimately it’s the rugby. We’ve got to focus on how we get that better."

Tandy believes these tough matches, even the ones that end in heavy defeats, are crucial for Wales' development. "We need games of rugby as a nation that wants to get better. Yes, we had to bring people in and it isn’t perfect circumstances. But you find out about people in these times as well. We should be down about the scoreboard, but I’m not going to sit here and throw stones at different things, because ultimately it’s my job to coach the team."

South Africa's coach, Rassie Erasmus, acknowledged Etzebeth's red card was deserved. But Erasmus also offered a glimmer of hope for Wales, drawing on his own experience. He recalled playing in South Africa’s record-breaking 96-13 victory against Wales in 1998, only to be on the losing side against them in Cardiff just a year later.

"I refer to ’98 and ’99 because it shows things can change quickly,” Erasmus pointed out. "You’ve got the support here and if you can get on a little bit of a roll, things will change."

So, what do you think? Was the scheduling of the match a critical error that set Wales up for failure? Or are these tough losses a necessary part of the rebuilding process? Can Wales truly bounce back from such a devastating defeat, as Erasmus suggests? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
