Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader, has sparked controversy by confirming his participation in peace talks with the Zamfara State Government, while vehemently denying any financial gain. Turji, who has been identified as one of the most dangerous armed group leaders in the North-West by Nigerian security agencies, claims he did not receive the alleged ₦30 million payoff. Instead, he accuses former governors of fueling insecurity and calls for their arrest and investigation.
The peace talks, which took place during the administration of former governor Bello Muhammad Matawalle, aimed to reduce violence and restore peace in the state. However, Turji's rebuttal to the allegations by former peace mediator Musa Kamarawa has raised questions about the true intentions behind these negotiations. Kamarawa claimed that Turji and other bandit leaders received cash and vehicles during the meetings, which Turji vehemently denies.
In a separate video response, Turji dismissed the allegations as false, insisting that the peace talks were solely aimed at reducing violence and that neither he nor any Fulani leader acting on his behalf received any financial benefits. He accused Kamarawa of betraying the trust built during the negotiations and spreading false testimony.
Turji also accused past political leadership in Zamfara and Sokoto states of laying the foundation for the region's long-standing insecurity. He named former governors Attahiru Bafarawa and Ahmed Sani Yerima, calling for their arrest and investigation over their alleged roles in the crisis. Turji insists he is not acting on behalf of any politician or interest group, framing his remarks as a personal defense.
Despite his claims, Turji's involvement in the peace talks and his denial of financial gain have sparked debate and raised questions about the true nature of these negotiations. The controversy highlights the complex dynamics and challenges in addressing insecurity in the region, with Turji's actions and statements serving as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace and stability.
