A nature reserve is being established alongside the Strawberry Line in Somerset, a popular walking and cycling route through rural landscapes. Volunteers at Hollybrook reserve are creating a dedicated space by fencing off a section of land adjacent to the line, which stretches from Yatton railway station to Shepton Mallet. The reserve will feature a picnic area near Wells, offering visitors a chance to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Additionally, a lookout point will provide breathtaking views of the Somerset Levels, extending towards Panborough and Wedmore. Mick Fletcher, chairman of the Strawberry Line Society, highlights the rich wildlife within the embankment, including badger sett, rabbits, foxes, birds, and deer. The nature reserve is strategically located between the existing path and the properties along the busy A371, accessible via an archway near Erlon Lane, once part of the Cheddar Valley railway line. This project is supported by the charities Greenways and Cycleroutes, dedicated to developing community-run walking and cycling routes. One of the key focuses is to improve accessibility for individuals with limited mobility, including those using manually operated wheelchairs, pushchairs, and Zimmer frames. Mr. Fletcher emphasizes that this accessibility feature is not merely an added convenience but an integral part of the project's mission. The Strawberry Line aims to provide access to the countryside, foster communication between communities, and significantly enhance opportunities for nature and biodiversity. This holistic approach ensures that the reserve serves as a vibrant hub for both residents and visitors alike.
