New £200,000 Contemporary Art Prize Launched by Serpentine and FLAG Art Foundation (2026)

Get ready, art enthusiasts! A groundbreaking collaboration between London's Serpentine and New York's FLAG Art Foundation is about to shake up the contemporary art scene. They're launching a brand-new prize, promising to catapult emerging artists into the international spotlight.

This isn't just any award; it's a 10-year commitment that will select one deserving artist every two years. The winner will receive a whopping £200,000, a significant boost for any artist! But here's where it gets interesting: the selection process. Artists will be nominated, and a rotating jury of curators, art historians, and artists will make the final decision. To be eligible, artists must have been exhibiting professionally for less than 10 years and be actively working to expand their international presence.

What's in it for the winner? A solo exhibition at both the Serpentine and FLAG Art Foundation, along with a dedicated catalogue and live program. As Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of the Serpentine, put it, 'What makes this prize so significant is its focus on artists who have not yet received the visibility or recognition they deserve.'

Glenn Fuhrman, founder of The FLAG Art Foundation, added that this partnership 'marks FLAG’s most significant commitment to artists beyond the United States'. This collaboration aims to provide new opportunities for artists to share their work with a global audience.

The first artist will be chosen in 2026, with the exhibition debuting at the Serpentine in autumn 2027 and then traveling to FLAG in spring 2028.

What do you think about this initiative? Do you believe this prize will truly help emerging artists? Share your thoughts in the comments below! What kind of impact do you think this prize will have on the art world?
