The Louvre Museum is facing a perfect storm of issues, leading to planned strikes by its workers. From crumbling infrastructure to security breaches, the iconic museum is struggling to maintain its status as a world-renowned cultural destination. Workers at the Louvre have voted to strike, starting next Monday, citing a multitude of concerns. These include poor working conditions, a controversial ticket price increase for non-European visitors, and, most alarmingly, significant security vulnerabilities.
In a letter addressed to France’s culture minister, the unions CGT, CFDT, and Sud highlighted that visiting the Louvre has become a real obstacle course for the millions who come to admire its art and artifacts. They describe the museum as being in a state of "crisis," with insufficient resources and increasingly deteriorated working conditions.
And this is the part most people miss: The unions' strike notice specifically pointed to the daylight theft of France’s Crown Jewels in October 2025 as a major catalyst for the strike. This brazen heist exposed critical shortcomings in the museum's security protocols, which had been previously reported.
The robbery was a major blow, with the stolen loot estimated to be worth a staggering 88 million euros (approximately $102 million). The thieves, who took less than eight minutes to execute their plan, used a freight lift to access a window, angle grinders to cut through display cases, and motorbikes for their escape. The stolen items, which include a diamond-and-emerald necklace given by Napoleon, jewels linked to 19th-century queens, and Empress Eugénie’s pearl-and-diamond tiara, have not yet been recovered.
Beyond the security concerns, the upkeep of the Louvre's historic buildings, once a palace for French royalty, has also fallen behind. A water leak on November 26 damaged several hundred publications in the museum's library, and last month, some employee offices and a public gallery were temporarily closed due to weakened floor beams.
But here's where it gets controversial... The unions are demanding that resources be redirected towards building improvements and safeguarding the museum, its collections, visitors, and employees. Christian Galani, a CGT union official, stated that the strike vote was unanimous and that the planned rolling strikes could potentially force the museum's closure.
