Crystal Dynamics has just tipped the scales with two hot announcements in the Legacy of Kain universe, including the first entirely new entry in 23 years and a sleek Soul Reaver remaster that promises to polish the classic without losing its edge.
Kain and Raziel fans, rejoice.
The Legacy of Kain franchise stands as a cherished cult favorite among gamers, especially for readers who grew up with a dark, Gothic vibe and a keen interest in lore. The series began with Blood Omen in 1996, followed by Soul Reaver in 1999. It then enjoyed a three-game arc—Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2, and Legacy of Kain: Defiance—before going quiet in 2003. Nearly two decades later, the 2024 Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered sparked renewed enthusiasm and brought renewed attention to the universe.
During PlayStation’s State of Play and in a subsequent press release, Crystal Dynamics confirmed two fresh releases in the LoK line that are coming soon.
First up is Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, slated for 3 March 2026. It will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store). Crystal Dynamics and PlayEveryWare lead the remake, with pre-orders offering bonus skins for Kain and Raziel drawn from the original Shifter concept.
A press release outlines that Defiance Remastered will modernize the 2003 action-adventure with upgraded graphics, refreshed controls, and a wealth of bonus content. Key upgrades include true HD visuals, a redesigned camera, enhanced character models, textures, and environments, plus the option to switch on the fly between classic and modern presentation—mirroring the approach used in Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered. Players can choose either the original fixed camera or a new third-person camera tailored for current platforms. The package also adds features like a photo mode, alternate character skins, a comprehensive lore reader, and previously unreleased content and “lost levels” from the original game. Fans who enjoyed Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered will feel right at home with these additions.

The second reveal, announced right after the showcase and teased in a pre-show press briefing, is Legacy of Kain: Ascendance. This is described as a fast-paced 2D action platformer published by Crystal Dynamics and developed by Bit Bot Media in collaboration with FreakZone Games (A Bit Bot Company). It introduces an entirely new gameplay style to the franchise while returning the original voice cast for the iconic roles, including Simon Templeman as Kain, Michael Bell as Raziel, Anne Gunn as Ariel, and Richard Doyle as Moebius.
Ascendance presents itself as a rather unconventional entry. In a Crystal Dynamics briefing shown before the State of Play, the team called Ascendance a “prequel,” even though the timeline still hops around Nosgoth via Moebius. The game blends art styles: 3D segments inspired by PS1-era visuals provide story-driven interaction and lore-heavy sequences, while major plot moments are supported by anime-inspired sequences. Mechanically, the game is a 2D action platformer, an approach some fans may liken to modern retro revivals like Shinobi: Vengeance or Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound.

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance lands on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store) on 31 March 2026. My personal verdict is still forming, but I’m glad to see any Legacy of Kain content arriving in 2026. Crystal Dynamics also promises that there’s more to come.
