Derek Kneeland, a seasoned spotter in NASCAR, is about to embark on a thrilling new adventure. But this time, he's not just guiding drivers from above; he's becoming one himself! In a surprising twist, the 39-year-old will make his driving debut in the ARCA East Series at Hickory Motor Speedway on March 28.
Kneeland, a true racer at heart, has been an integral part of the Pinnacle Racing Group's (PRG) driver development program, mentoring young talents like Connor Mosack, Connor Zilisch, and Brenden Queen. His expertise and credibility impressed team owners Mark and Jerry Webb, leading them to offer Kneeland a chance behind the wheel.
The opportunity came as a shock to Kneeland, who initially thought it was a prank. But when the offer stood, he knew he couldn't refuse. However, it wasn't without its challenges. The race coincided with a NASCAR Cup Series practice and the O'Reilly Series race, and Kneeland needed approval from his bosses at Richard Childress Racing (RCR).
But here's where the racing community shines. Everyone at RCR encouraged Kneeland to seize the opportunity. His fellow drivers, Hill, Busch, Love, Heim, and Queen, offered their support and advice. It's a testament to the camaraderie within the racing world.
Kneeland, feeling like a 16-year-old newcomer, is soaking up all the knowledge he can. He's studying past races and even getting some virtual practice on Mosack's sim rig. But he's also aware of the countless other deserving racers, especially in his native New England, who could benefit from such an opportunity.
'I know there are so many deserving racers... I could rattle off 50 names right now that deserve a shot like this,' Kneeland acknowledges. 'But at the same time, this team really values the job I've done for them, and they want to give something back.'
This ARCA start is more than just a race; it's a chance for Kneeland to prove himself and honor the faith placed in him by the PRG team. It's a rare opportunity to showcase his skills on a national stage with a championship-caliber team.
'I'm just going to put my best foot forward and soak it all in because this is probably going to be my one and done shot,' he says, emphasizing the rarity of the moment. 'I want to capture all the memories and get everything I can out of it.'
As Kneeland prepares for his debut, the racing world eagerly awaits his performance. Will he defy the odds and prove himself among the top talents? Only time will tell. And this is where the real excitement begins!
