8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (2023)

In my list of the best meditation chairs, I’ve included all the best meditation seats for you based on your individual needs.

Meditation chairs are one of the most important types of meditation furniture to buy. Meditation chairs are so important because they help you sit in the right position for meditation [READ: ]. We want to sit with good posture so we protect our knees and back.

When you sit for hours on end, you can gravely injure your spine. And if you think that this has already started to happen, you need to make some changes. As is often said by many meditation teachers, such as Andy Puddicombe of Headspace, sitting in the proper position is essential for good practice.

Start by getting yourself a good cushion [READ: The Best Cushions]

At the same time, you will want to get one of the best meditation chairs because these will help you to sit correctly during practice.

Comfort is essential too. Indeed, in tue fabulous Thich Nhat Hanh’s book How To Sithe states that the most important thing about a meditator’s position is that they are comfortable. Yet at the same time, we must be attentive. As Zen Master Maezumi Roshi says, “Mere physical sitting is not enough. You have to sit carefully and attentively. Let your body and breathing sit. Let your mind and emotions sit. Let your blood circulation sit. Let everything sit. Then your sitting becomes indestructible, immovable.”

Let’s look at some of the best meditation chairs for comfort and posture.

8 Best Meditation Chairs

1: Alexia Meditation Chair

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (1)8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (2)

The Alexia seat is the best meditation chair for the home if you are looking to create a meditation room.

When you’re looking to buy a meditation chair, comfort is the top priority. This one is so comfortable that you will never want to leave it. It is custom-built exclusively for your sitting practice, and it provides everything you need from a seat. You can feel it supporting your body in the right places, and because of that support, it is effortless to get comfortable. This is one of the very best meditation chairs with back support.

On the negative side: This is one of the larger seats and is not ideal for travel. It is a permanent piece of furniture to be put in your studio and left there, rather than taking to retreats.

One of my favovite things about this seat is that there are lots of colour options. Plus, it comes in vegan-friendly materials, which is an excellent thing as we all know how important it is to love and support the environment.

If you’re looking for an ergonomic meditation chair with back support, this is a great choice. And I personally consider it to be the best meditation chair for seniors.

  • Large and sturdy
  • Very high quality
  • Exceptionally comfortable
  • One of the best meditation chairs for back support

  • Not ideal for travelling
  • Expensive.

2: Back Jack Floor Chair

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (3) GET IT ON AMAZON

I consider this the best meditation chairs to buy if you’re going on a retreat.

When you’re looking to buy a meditation chair, floor chairs are a good option. They offer good back support while also being incredibly portable. You can quickly put this one in your car whenever you go to a retreat or on a hike. It’s also lightweight and small.

The Back Jack Floor Chair’s ergonomic design makes it perfect if you have back problems. And some of my meditation students have said that using these chairs doesn’t just prevent you from feeling back pain but helps to cure back problems.

However, I do find this ergonomic meditation chair a rickety, and its minimalist design won’t serve as a focal point in your studio.

That said, I think it’s one of the most reliable options and offers excellent support.

  • Easy to travel with
  • One of the best meditation chairs for back support

  • Not the fanciest design

3: Buddha Bliss Meditation Chair

The Friends Of Buddha was specifically designed to make Satsang (sacred gathering) and retreats more comfortable. Naturally, when you are at a retreat, you need an excellent seat, one you can sit in for extended periods. I find this one great for that.

I also must say it is one of the best meditation chairs for travel. The Buddha Bliss is fully foldable, so you can easily squeeze it in the back of your car.

It is ideal for people under 5 foot 9 (which sadly means it is not suitable for me, at 5 foot 11). If you’re looking for a meditation chair with back support for tall people, this might not be ideal.

As a bonus, I lovd the bonus cushion which is small and firm.

  • Very comfortable for people who are 5 foot 9 and under.
  • Looks exactly like it does in the image.
  • High quality build.
  • Suitable for extended periods of sitting.

  • Not suitable for people over 5 foot 10.
  • Quite heavy when travelling.

4: Mulu

The Mulu isn’t just a meditation chair. It is also great for office, home, or pretty much anywhere. You can use it for sitting or lying down, and the cushion is remarkably comfortable. It’s great for travelling with too.

It features six different positions and can even be laid down completely flat so you can lie on it. Design-wise it looks subtle and modern if that’s your style, and the reinforced steel means it is plenty durable enough. It also has a removable cover so you can wash it easily if you spill your smoothie on it.

  • Comfortable
  • Removable cover for easy cleaning
  • Good for travelling

  • Some people have commented that it falls back when you recline in it.

This non-slip memory foam meditation cushion helps to cradle your hips for better posture. I appreciate the unique design. It has a centre that is shaped like a bowling pin. This bowling-pin space in the middle increases ventilation to stop the cushion from getting too hot. So, if you don’t like a warm bootie, you’ll love this.

It is particularly helpful for “relief for Prostate, Hemorrhoid, Sciatica, Hip, Lower & Upper Back, Tailbone, Pregnancy Pain.” So, if you have any of those conditions, this is the best meditation chair to buy.

As you can see from the image, you can also place this seat in a wheelchair, which is perhaps its most unique feature. I absolute love this because I believe in making meditation accessible to all.

  • Soft and offers plenty of give.
  • One of the most versatile options.
  • Excellent build quality.

  • Compresses significantly when you sit on it.

6: Gaiam Rattan Meditation Chair

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (7)GET IT ON AMAZON

I feel so stylish sitting in this luxury seat made by the very highly respected Gaiam.

The Gaiam Rattan meditation chair has a rattan base with a tall back, meaning it is ideal for tall people. It’s ergonomically designed with back support, and there is lots of room for those of us who need a little more space. I find the cotton cushion incredibly comfortable, and there’s enough space to sit in lotus position.

  • Beautiful
  • Luxurious
  • Lots of space

  • Expensive

7: Friends Of Meditation Chair

Designed by a registered yoga teacher and Osho facilitator, this large meditation chair (with an even larger name) fits people up to 6 foot 2 inches, which makes it one of the best meditation chairs for tall people.

This Osho chair is very comfortable and makes it easier to sit in Lotus position. I find this much more comfortable than a wooden chair. If you have back pain, you will find this seat very beneficial, especially with its additional backrest, which offers lower back support.

As a nice bonus, it comes with a complimentary bag for travelling, and it is fully foldable. All in all, this is one of the best meditation chairs for taller people and those who like to travel.

  • Ideal for tall people
  • Given its size, it is easy to travel with

  • Expensive

8: Xotic Seagrass

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (9)GET IT ON AMAZON

The Xotic Seagrass meditation chair looks beautiful and has a unique design that sets it apart from the pack. It is curved with extra space for the feet and knees when you want to sit in Lotus position. I like the fact that it’s low enough to cross your ankles on the ground when you sit, if you prefer that position.

In my opinion, this is one of the best meditation chairs visually. But I dont like the lack of fabric selections.

  • Very comfortable
  • Unique design
  • Lots of space

  • Expensive

9: Giantex 14 Position Floor Chair

This is a good floor chair for meditation and is available in black, brown, grey, pink, purple and tan. It is adjustable but is not easy to transport. It offers fourteen different positions and is in my experience one of the most comfortable meditation chairs.

Unfortunately you do have to spot-clean it because the cover is made from flannel fabric. I also get annoyed when I have to lay it flat for storage and transportation. It does offer some of the best back supports in a meditation chair though, and is great for keeping at home.

10: Ashan Yoga Seat Strap

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (11)

Check price on Amazon

The Ashan Yoga Seat Strap is available in blue and purple. I dig its portability. It’s foldable and easy to put in the car. It is definitely one of the most unique chairs in this list and is great for reducing knee pain when meditating for long periods.

The band in the chair supports the back, which stretches to your feet while you’re sitting in Lotus position. You can also strap it to your back so you can carry it to meditation retreats. Some people have told me that it isn’t as comfortable if you have bad back pain. Plus, it’s not the best meditation chair for large people.

11: DRAGONN ergonomic kneeling chair

The Dragonn ergonomic kneeling chair says in the product description that it is the best chair for improving meditation positions and reducing slouching. They specifically state that it is a good substitution for your regular office chair.

I find this seat great for performing Seiza meditation position, although I will warn you that it has wheels so you might find yourself sliding about a bit.

Zen’s Bamboo floor chair

This Zen floor chair is brown and white with a classic look. It is quite limited compared to other options in this list. For instance, it is not foldable and is not easy to transport. But I do find it excellent for low sitting, and the covers are removable and washable.

I included it in this list of the best meditation chairs because I love it for sitting low and it has good back support. However, because it is not adjustable, there are not many poses you can do in it. It’s an elegant floor lounger if you want to keep it in the same place, but it is not easy to carry.

LZ Leisure Zone Adjustable Floor Chair

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (14)

Check price on Amazon

The LZ Leisure Zone Adjustable Floor Chair is available in orange and coffee and is easy to transport. It is a very plush chair that I personally do find very comfortable. Plus, it is easy to carry around.

This is a great chair for the meditation room, with 5 adjustable positions and the ability to lie it flat when you want to tuck it away. Lumbar support is good although some of the other meditation chairs in this list are better.

I find that it isn’t the easiest floor lounger to clean because you can’t remove the cover and instead you need to spot clean it, which is a chore.

WAYTRIM Adjustable meditation chair

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (15)

Check price on Amazon

This one comes in coffee, blue and grey and is foldable and easy to transport, meaning you can take it on retreat with you.

The filling is made from recycled cotton and the cover from cotton and linen.

I find this to be one of the best meditation chairs for back support on the lumbar. Plus, the fact that it is foldable makes it easy to carry. It comes with six adjustable positions so you can find the perfect position for you. The one slight setback is the lack of memory foam.

On the negative side, some people have said that it is not the best meditation chair for a large person.

NNEWVANTE Adjustable Floor Chair

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (16)

Check price on Amazon

This one is foldable, easy to carry, can be used for multi purposes, and is available in green, blue and pink.

The NNEWVANTE adjustable floor chair offers ergonomic back support and five different positions so you can recline in it. I find this one very easy to clean because the cover can be removed, and from reviews it seems that it is as good for kids as for adults. The one drawback is that you can’t sit on it crossed-legged—well, I can’t, anyway.

Best Choice meditation chair

8 Best Meditation Chairs We Truly Love In 2018 (17)

Check price on Amazon

The Best Choice meditation floor chair comes in brown, blue, grey, eggplant and orange and is foldable but not easy to carry on retreats.

The seat has 14 seating positions. It looks posh and is made from plush fabric and chopped memory foam filling, which I personally find incredibly comfortable.

What I find strange is that despite the fact that it has 14 different sitting positions it cannot be folded in such a way as to make it easily storable. You have to lay it flat instead, which makes it difficult to carry around.

It does have good back support for meditation and can be used for other purposes too. Some people say that it is not as big as the product description suggests.

Overall, I like the look of it and the back support is excellent, but it’s a shame that it can’t be folded.

Benefits of Meditation Chairs

Meditation chairs are one of the essential tools for your studio. In my private meditation session, I usually recommended getting both a meditation seat and cushion. Both are reasonably inexpensive items, and both will do wonders for you.

Well, let me ask you: Have you ever tried meditating on the bus?I take the bus everywhere because I love to help the environment. And I always meditate on the bus because it is a challenge. The discomfort makes it difficult to relax, and the other passengers make it hard to focus.

A good seat does the opposite. The best meditation chairs have back support that is specifically designed to support proper posture so you can find your Zen.

It’s crucial to be comfortable when meditating; otherwise, you will not focus properly (especially if you’re using specific sitting positions, like those in Zazen).

Put simply: Get a good seat so you can sit comfortably and focus.

One of the risks is that you will damage your spine by sitting with bad posture. This won’t happen if you have the right support. When you get a good chair, two good things will happen. Firstly, it will help you to sit with proper posture. This helps to support your body and to prevent injury.Secondly, the best meditation chairs help you to stop fidgeting so you can focus.

Regardless of the design, fabric, colour, and other aesthetic choices, comfort and focus are paramount. You will know that a chair is inadequate when it does not achieve those two things.

When you buy a meditation chair, make sure it offers excellent spinal support and helps you to focus. When you sit in it you should feel relaxed; not tired, not lazy, but comfortable and focused.

Other benefits:

  • Help you sit in the right postures.
  • Support your weight
  • Offer lumbar support
  • Help you focus
  • Reduce the strain of sitting

Meditation Chair Buying Tips

When you buy a meditation chair, consider these things:

  • If you get an antique, make sure that it is in good condition and not liable to break.
  • A cheap one may not be durable because it will be made of cheap fabric. That said, some cheap ones are perfectly acceptable.
  • When you’re looking to buy cheap furniture, you won’t get everything. With a cheap one, you have to choose between design and comfort (choose comfort; after all, this is for meditating, not decorative furniture).
  • If you want to conserve space, you should consider a collapsible seat.
  • It is possible to make a DIY meditation chair, but be honest with yourself, will a DIY version have enough back support? If not, is it worth putting your time and effort into making one? (If you want to make it for fun because you love crafts then sure, go DIY nuts, don’t let me stop you, but just be aware that it probably won’t end up as good as a professionally constructed one).
  • There are lots of different types of meditation chairs (Chakra, Dhyana, lotus, Nori, Osho, Tibetan). Still, regardless of the specific style and design, they should all offer the same benefits, which we’ve looked at above.
  • If you have a small room, you might want to look for a foldable meditation chair to buy. This will conserve space.
  • As with any other product, prices vary. How much do they cost? From $20 to several thousand (for antiques).

Thanks to the very talented manufacturers on this list, there are lots of options no matter what you’re looking for.

When you buy a meditation chair, always remember that the most critical things are that it offers excellent support for your body and that it helps you focus. All the ones we’ve looked at in this list will do precisely that.

Note that if you still find it uncomfortable sitting in meditation, Yang Yang [founder, Center For Taiji And Qigong Studies and clinician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York] tells us that standing meditation is also a great option and is a fundamental teaching of Chinese martial arts.

Lying down is also an option, and this method is used by the likes of Jon Kabat Zinn [American professor emeritus of medicine and the creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School] as part of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course.
